“It’s not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” -Audre Lorde
“Unity is oneness of purpose, not sameness of persons.” – Tony Evans
Memorial day week is such a fun week to kick off summer; BBQ’s, lake trips, popsicles, time with family and friends, staying up late, sun tan lines, kids out of school, flip flops on, etc etc. And while those things are great, there is so much more to this week than we sometimes pause to even think on. It makes me sad to think there are people who believe in our nation so much, that they are willing to die fighting, and there are others who seem to only want to divide it more with opinions and hate.
We are all made differently but I think it’s safe to say we all want a life filled with freedom, joy, prosperity, and to be surrounded by loved ones. Sometimes it seems the world uses our differences to divide us, when really, we are all hoping for a lot of the same things.
When I sit back and really think about my life, I am overfilled with gratitude for this incredible gift I get to live out. Freedom comes in places big and small, and It’s incredible to me that there are people in this world fighting so I can live a free and fulfilled life.
The next time you engage or even see a conversation or topic that’s divisive, I want you to pause and think of the ones who died for you and this country. Before you engage in anything that could divide us more, I want you remember that this life is meant to be so much more. And while you may disagree with others, remember they are human made from the same cloth, wanting a fulfilled life just like you. Maybe if we all paused and reflected on gratitude before speaking, the world would be a kinder place.
“Unity doesn’t magically happen; it takes work. It is messy, sometimes uncomfortable, and happens gradually when we clear away the bad as fast as the good can grow.” -Sharon Eubank
